An intra-articular injection is a term used to describe a shot delivered directly into a joint with the primary aim of relieving pain.

An intra-articular injection is a term used to describe a shot delivered directly into a joint with the primary aim of relieving pain. Corticosteroids (steroids) were the first substances used for this purpose. Other types of drug are now commonly used including local anesthetics and hyaluronic acid. The use of arthrogram allows for the smaller inner joint spaces to be seen through MRI, X-ray, or Fluoroscopy. Having this aspect creates the ability to determine and pinpoint where the pain is coming from and further plan any treatment necessary.
